Teachers Helping Another Teacher (T.H.A.T.)
Members volunteer in classrooms to provide whatever assistance a teacher most needs: grading papers, tutoring, reading to students, progress testing, behavioral observations, small enrichment groups, art docents, etc. Members mentor teachers, help them devise behavioral management plans, model instructional strategies, train para-educators or modify materials for special needs students. Any teacher (or administrator) wanting assistance merely needs to contact us with the request. Members are informed of the need and a volunteer obtained. T.H.A.T. assistance is not part of any teacher evaluation program.
School Supplies and Support to Homeless and other At-risk Students
Chapter members collect school supplies and backpacks for donation to the student residents at Eli's Place, a local shelter for abuse victims. Books, school supplies and clothing items are also donated to homeless teens through the Poulsbo Coffee Oasis program. Members also donate and/or collect donations of toiletries, food, baby supplies and clothing for local food banks, teen parenting programs or other designated programs serving at-risk students.
Outstanding Educator Recognition
Believing that many teachers are unsung heros who go above and beyond to provide exceptional teaching to students, the Alpha Sigma Kitsap Chapter annually solicits nominations for Outstanding Educators of the Year, celebrating these individuals through a recognition ceremony, certificate, and reception for awardees, their families and colleagues. The award ceremony includes a key note by the mayor and publication
of the pictures and names of the awarded educators in the local press.
